BRANDYWINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Flu Season Guidelines from our Corporation Nurse

Document

Brandywine Elementary School recently issued the following announcement.

Dear Southern Hancock parents,

As many of you are aware, we are in the middle of the influenza season. In addition to influenza, we have seen an increase in reports of stomach viruses in the home. We prioritize the health of our students and staff, and we appreciate your support in helping us provide a healthy building for your student and our staff.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends not returning to school or work until fever free (100.0 or higher) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. Students and staff should stay home until these criteria are met.

Additionally, students and staff who have had diarrhea or vomited at home should not be present in the building until 24 hours have passed without vomiting or diarrhea.

There are a few things parents can do to help protect your child’s health. These include reminding them to wash their hands often with soap and water, drying hands well when done, encouraging children to cover their cough or sneezes with the upper part of their arm or tissue, and reminding them not to share personal items such as cups, water bottles, and utensils.

Personal devices such as iPads, phones, and laptops should be cleaned regularly. Zeiss lens wipes are recommended by our IT department. Please do not use Clorox wipes for your child's device. Clorox wipes may destroy the keyboards. Zeiss lens wipes contain active ingredients commonly used to clean medical equipment.

Should the school contact you regarding your sick child, we ask that you please pick them up promptly. This will help limit the exposure that other students and staff members will have to the illness.

Thank you for working with us to help maintain a healthy learning environment for your student and our staff.

Please contact your school’s clinic if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Heather Barnett, RN
